| henrywei's Full Review: Zen Palate - Upper West Side |
I went to Zen Palate with a bunch of friends for a friend's birthday, and needless to say, we all enjoyed it quite a bit. Most of the dishes were either tofu or tempeh/gluten based, and reasonably-priced, as far as Upper West Side prices go. If you're a vegetarian who doesn't appreciate efforts to make the dishes taste like meat, though, try to avoid the meaty-sounding dishes (which actually come close to their meat-based counterparts, which I can say as a carnivore). The vegetarian dumplings were a great appetizer to start with, and the pear pie was a decent way to top off the dinner. The design of the restaurant is very consistent with the food, with an even, soothing ambiance that is still conducive to lively conversation. My only complaint would be that my friend got into a brief argument with a waitress over whether or not tortillas were the same concept as the rice wrappers, which says nothing about the restaurant, really, but it may be something to avoid mentioning anyhow. Make reservations if you can -- we still had to wait a few minutes even though we booked ahead of time.
